Keshwar, who is to represent South Africa at the 58th annual Miss Universe pageant in the Bahamas on August 23, is scheduled to leave for the Paradise Islands on Friday July 31.

She will compete against beauties from countries such as New Zealand, Spain, Venezuela and India. The current Miss Universe, Venezuelan beauty Dayana Mendoza, will hand over the title.

She is afraid people will not believe that the business is only three years old.

It typically takes years for a designer to hone their skills and build their brands. It took John Galliano, the creative director of Christian Dior, more than five years to finally show his designs at the Paris fashion week after graduating from fashion school in the late 1980s.

It’s no mean feat then, that the Imani fashion house has managed to build a label that participated successfully in the Arise Magazine African fashion week held in Johannesburg, South Africa last month.

Penn nursing students to provide community service - in Africa

AlvarezAll University of Pennsylvania nursing students must complete a "Nursing in the Community" course, which places them in various clinical settings to gain hands-on experience.

But instead of working at a Philly-area hospital or clinic like most of their classmates, eight students were headed to Botswana yesterday, where they will spend the next month in hospitals, clinics and orphanages.

This is the second year that Penn nursing students have traveled to the HIV-ravaged Southern African nation for unique on-the-job training, said Kathy McCauley, associate dean for academic programs.
